Internal Competitions

Over the course of the year, MUDS runs several different internal competitions open to all members. These competitions occur as part of most of our Tuesday night meetings, and are a fun, low-stress opportunity to get involved in debating.

Herbert Smith Freehills Cup

The Melbourne University Debating Society Herbert Smith Freehills Cup is the first internal competition run by the Society each year. It is a '3 on 3' style competition (the same as is used in the DAV schools competition) and a great introduction to debating at a university level.

Hamish Malcolm Cup

MUDS begins second semester with the Hamish Malcolm Cup, which is run in British Parliamentary style (as used at Worlds). This is particularly useful for those who are new to this style of debating.

Open Competition

The MUDS Open Competition, which generally runs over two weeks at the end of semester two, is open in two senses: firstly, there is no novice rule, so people can debate with whomever they like; and secondly, is debated with open motions (i.e. 'That we should regulate rather than ban', giving teams a wide scope with which to set a definition.
